How to allow a website if Elements Web Content Control has blocked it due to restricted category?

Issue:

A user is unable to access a website (URL address) because the category of the website they are trying to access is blocked by Elements Endpoint Protection Web Content Control feature.

How to create an exclusion rule for Web Content Control or allow a website?

User is shown locally in the brower:

  • Website blocked
  • WithSecure Elements Agent has blocked this content because it is restricted in category: <category-here>

Elements Security Center portal's Events > Security events shows the following alert event:

  • Web content control blocked webpage due to category "<category-here>" being disallowed

Resolution:

If a website is blocked by a Web Content Control category and your users need to be able to access it, you can add the website to the Allowed sites list in the Elements profile:

  1. Log in to the Elements Security Center portal
  2. Navigate to the Security configurations > profiles page
  3. Open the profile that is in use on the affected devices
  4. Go to the Browsing protection settings page
  5. In the Web site exceptions, toggle Enable web site exceptions
  6. Click Add sites under Allowed sites
  7. Enter the URL address of the website that is shown in the block alert or security event
  8. Click Save profile

Alternatively if you do not want to block a certain website category, you can edit the Web content control settings:

  1. Log in to the Elements Security Center portal
  2. Navigate to the Security configurations > profiles page
  3. Open the profile that is in use on the affected devices
  4. Go to the Browsing protection settings page
  5. Scroll down to the Web content control section
  6. Disable the blocking for a category from the Block column
  7. Click Save profile
