Getting started with WithSecure™ Elements Mobile Protection for Android

Follow the steps below to deploy and activate WithSecure™ Elements Mobile Protection on Android devices and turn on browsing, SMS, network, and malware protection.
Android 12 or later required

You need a WithSecure™ Business Account to access Elements Security Center ↗, the unified management platform for all WithSecure™ Elements products. There are two scenarios:

  • Partner-created account: When you purchase the product from a WithSecure™ partner, the partner typically creates a Business Account for the first administrator in your organization. You will have received an email from WithSecure™ with a temporary password and a link to log in to Elements Security Center.
  • Self-registration with a subscription key: If your account has not yet been created but you have received a subscription key from your partner, you can use it to self-register. Go to elements.withsecure.com/self-register ↗ and follow the on-screen instructions to create a Business Account for the first administrator in your organization.
Tip: If you have not received the welcome email, check your junk mail folder. The email is sent from noreply@withsecure.com.

Use your Business Account credentials to log in to WithSecure™ Elements Security Center ↗.

Mobile device settings and device management are found under Environment > Devices > Mobile devices in the sidebar.

Add Android devices for management by sending an email invitation to each user. The invitation contains a personalized download link and an activation link for the app.

  1. In Elements Security Center, under Environment, select Devices > Mobile devices.
  2. Select the three-dots icon next to Devices, then select Add new device.
  3. Select the subscription to use and select Next.
  4. Follow the steps in the wizard and send an email invitation to one or more users with a download link to the installer.
How invitations work: Each invitation link is unique and valid for a single installation within 29 days of being sent. Sent invitations remain visible in the portal until installation is complete. You can re-send an invitation or generate a new one with an updated link if the previous one expires.
Deploying via MDM? If you are deploying to a large number of devices using an MDM solution such as Microsoft Intune, VMware Workspace ONE, Google Workspace, IBM MaaS360, Ivanti Endpoint Management, Miradore, or Samsung Knox, see the MDM deployment appendix in the Elements Mobile Protection for Android user guide ↗. Microsoft Intune supports silent activation with zero-touch permission handling.

End users complete the installation on their own Android device. They will receive an email with two links: one to install the app from Google Play Store, and one to activate the license.

  1. Open the invitation email on the Android device.
  2. Tap the link next to Android. You are redirected to Google Play Store where you can download and install the WithSecure™ Mobile Protection app.
  3. After the app has installed, go back to the invitation email and tap Activate for Android to activate the subscription.
  4. When prompted, tap Allow to grant the app the permissions it needs. The app requires access to photos, media, and files to scan for harmful items.
Important — activation link behavior: The activation link is valid for 29 days and can only be used once. If you have already logged in to the app with the username and password from the email but have not yet activated the license, you can still use the activation link. However, if you tap the activation link first and it fails for any reason, you will no longer be able to manually enter the credentials. If this happens, contact your administrator for a new invitation.
Note: The portal displays devices using the first and last names provided in the invitation. If no names were provided, it falls back to the email address, alias, or UUID.

After the app is installed and activated, the following protections are available. Network protection must be turned on first — it is required for reputation-based browsing.

Network protection

Network protection evaluates the reputation of URLs before websites are loaded, using WithSecure™ Security Cloud. To turn it on, open the app and on the main view under Network Protection, tap Protection: OFF.

SMS protection

SMS protection scans incoming SMS messages for unsafe links and malicious QR codes. Messages identified as unsafe are moved to the Junk folder automatically. To turn it on, open the app and on the main view under SMS protection, tap Protection: OFF.

Reputation-based browsing

Reputation-based browsing blocks websites that are suspicious or known to be malicious. It works at the network level across all browsers, providing protection regardless of which browser the user chooses.

To turn it on:

  1. In the app, tap the menu icon (☰) to open the Menu view.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Turn on Reputation-based browsing.

Once on, you can optionally enable individual blocking categories: harmful sites, suspicious sites, prohibited sites, trackers, and recently created domains.

Malware protection

Elements Mobile Protection for Android can scan your device for viruses and other threats. Automatic scanning is on by default and runs whenever an installed app is updated, the device restarts, or an SD card is mounted. You can also run a manual scan at any time.

Manual scan: On the main view, tap Malware Protection, then tap Start scan. When complete, the app shows files checked, apps checked, and threats detected.

Automatic scan settings: Tap the menu icon (☰), then Settings, and turn on Antivirus. You can also turn on Metered scan to allow scanning on metered network connections — note this may increase data usage.
