WithSecure™ aktualisiert seine Nutzungsbedingungen für unsere Produkte und Dienstleistungen
Allgemeine Produktlebenszyklus‑Richtlinien
Products reach their end of life for various reasons. These reasons may be due to changes in demand, technology innovation and changes in competitive landscape, or the products simply mature over time and are replaced by new ones.
While this is an established part of the overall product life cycle, WithSecure recognizes that end-of-life milestones often prompt customers to review the way in which such milestones impact the WithSecure products in their environments.
With this in mind, we have set out WithSecure's End of Life Policies to help customers better manage product end-of-life transition and to understand the role that WithSecure can play in helping them to migrate to alternative WithSecure products and solutions.
Introduction
Audience
The WithSecure Elements Product Lifecycle Policy is an external document aimed at summarizing the relevant information to external audiences.
Types of Releases
Early Access Releases
Early Access releases are fully functional, production quality product releases used for final validation of a product before full General Availability (GA) roll-out. Early Access releases are full product releases ready to go to GA in all other aspects than that they are offered to a limited group of customers while final product details and advanced/optional features are being worked on.
General Availability
Once products have been released to General Availability, they will need to be continuously updated. WithSecure Elements products are designed to provide customers with continuous improvements while causing minimal disturbance. This is achieved through a steady flow of minor updates and maintenance releases, as well as API updates.
Product version numbering
Products with installable agents
For products involving endpoint agents or other installable software, different product versions are recognized by version numbers.
The version numbering logic followed by WithSecure products is:
Year (Y.n)
Y represents the last two digits of the year this version was released
Release number (y.N)
N is a running index of releases made during that year.
For example, version 25.5 would be the fifth release made during 2025.
Cloud APIs
WithSecure Elements APIs are versionless in the sense that new functionality can be added to the existing APIs at any time in a manner that does not break backwards compatibility. Such changes do not in general result in API version number changes. As our system evolves and we introduce new functionality, we may face the need to remove or significantly alter some existing functionality from our APIs, breaking compatibility. In such cases, the functionality will be marked as deprecated in the documentation, and the change will be announced in the Elements Integrations change log.
In case of a breaking change, a new version of the API endpoint will be introduced. These will follow the following convention:
- …/endpoint_name/vX/
Product version support
The product version support policy is applied to the WithSecure™ Elements portfolio products, WithSecure Elements Security Center, WithSecure's Security Cloud and other APIs and services used by the Elements portfolio products.
Products with installable agents
All product versions with installable agents reach end of life three months after the general availability of the release of the next version following them.
WithSecure products are designed to automatically update to the latest available version. WithSecure may separately offer the ability for users to control the timing of some product updates to accommodate change control processes and maintenance windows. Withsecure may also indicate specific product versions that will be supported for longer than the standard 3 months from General Availability of the following version. To continue receiving standard support, the customer is expected to update to the newest version of the software.
WithSecure may elect to update parts of the software by issuing a maintenance release or hotfix instead of a full product release. Maintenance releases and hot fixes (where applicable) do not extend the lifespan of a product version. A new maintenance release automatically deprecates any previous maintenance release within the same product version. Maintenance releases have the same YEAR.index version number as the GA release they are fixing.
Cloud APIs
Cloud APIs reach end of support three months after the general availability of the release of the next version following them.
Product update policy
Regular Updates
WithSecure™ provides automatic product updates free of charge to all customers with valid licenses. The automatic update function is enabled by default. WithSecure may limit the ability of customers to restrict or control updates of product components, such as those that are critical for ensuring the security or performance of devices.
Endpoint devices and Scan Nodes are updated automatically via WithSecure’s built-in update mechanisms or via distribution mechanism provided by the platform vendor (such as an app store) where distribution is through a 3rd party. The following products and services are updated according to their own roadmaps, and do not require any action from customers.
- Elements Security Center
- Elements Client Software
- Scanning Engines
- Definitions / Databases
- Backend Services
- WithSecure’s public integration APIs
Emergency Updates
WithSecure may deliver emergency security updates outside the constraints of this policy when it is deemed necessary to maintain the integrity of the software and/or safety of the customer environments, and it is possible with reasonable effort. Emergency security updates are considered maintenance releases and do not extend the lifespan of the product.
Product and version End of Life
The threat landscape and customer requirements are constantly evolving, which means the capabilities of WithSecure products also need to keep evolving. While the regular version updates cater for most of the ongoing needs, sometimes e.g. changes in the technologies used require products to be retired from production. To ensure a coordinated ramp-down and excellent customer experience, product end-of-life is a formal process with defined steps and timelines.
Product end-of-life
WithSecure may decide on an end-of-life date for a product, for example due to changes in the threat landscape, technology becoming outdated, or changes in customer and market expectations. Upon becoming End-of Life, all support for a product will end, and all product specific back-end systems will be decommissioned. Unless otherwise required by e.g. regulations, all product-specific data will be erased according to data retention policies. After End-of-Life, the product or any related system or functionality may cease to function at any time without further notice.
Product version end-of-life
A product version becomes End-of-Life when it reaches a certain age, as specified above in the product version support section. A product version is also considered End-of-Life on a specific operating system version when that operating system version becomes unsupported by the vendor, as specified in the operating system support section.
Upon becoming End-of-Life, all support for a product version ends. This means, among other things, that:
- Security fixes and other improvements are not provided for unsupported product versions
- Product updates are not tested with unsupported operating system versions
- Virus definition updates and similar product database or product configuration updates are not tested with unsupported product versions.
Technical support is not offered for issues related to unsupported product versions
End-of-life communication
WithSecure™ makes end-of-life product announcements on the Product Updates page (https://www.withsecure.com/en/support/product-updates), in addition to any direct communication that may be deemed necessary.
Product End-of-Life communication
WithSecure will announce the End-of-Life of a Product or Service a minimum of 6 months before the final date of support.
Version-specific End-of-Life communication
Sometimes, WithSecure will need to stop support for a specific version of an Elements product or service. As Elements software is designed to automatically upgrade to the latest version, no specific communication will be made, apart from updates to the Product Updates web page , although exceptions are possible.
Changes to supported versions of operating systems follow the announcements by OS vendors, and what follows from this policy will occur automatically. In exceptional cases, these changes will be separately communicated.
Product versioning
The WithSecure Business Suite solution consists of various products, such as Policy Manager or Client Security. These products have major, minor, and maintenance versions. The major version can also be referred to as the series, defined by the major version number (e.g. 16-series). Each series has its own lifecycle, and multiple product series can be supported at the same time. Typical changes in the product per version type include:
- Major (M.0)
- Distinctively new product generation or significant changes in the product functionality, performance, or security
- Minor (x.N)
- New features and improvements
- Compatibility with changes in other WithSecure products
- Maintenance (x.xc)
- Address critical defects or vulnerabilities
- Support for 3rd party platform updates
- In principle, maintenance releases do not introduce changes to the existing functionality
- Hotfixes
- Also known as patches, they address individual or urgent fixes that do not require a full product release
- Come in two categories: security and non-security hotfixes
WithSecure reserves the right to discontinue or deprecate existing functionality upon releasing a new (major or minor) product version based on changes in the threat landscape, market situation, or any other business reason. All such changes are listed in the product release notes.
Product version support
The product versioning and lifecycle policy described here is applicable only to WithSecure Business Suite. WithSecure's Security Cloud and other backend systems that are used by the product follow an internal lifecycle policy and do not require any actions from customers. WithSecure updates Security Cloud and other services without impact to the application functionality and performance.
The lifecycle of a product series is a minimum of three (3) years from General Availability of the major version or until one (1) year after the release of the next major version, whichever is longer. Inside a product series, minor or maintenance releases do not extend the lifecycle.
A new maintenance release automatically deprecates any previous release within the same minor version. Security hotfixes are provided for every supported version, except in the case of Policy Manager where it is only applicable to the latest version within a series. Non-security hotfixes are provided only for the latest release within a series.
Product updates
WithSecure Business Suite products can be updated by installing the new version from our download section. Users are responsible for updating WithSecure products in their production and ensuring that they are using an officially supported version.
End-of-life communication
WithSecure makes end-of-life product announcements on the Product Updates page. We encourage users to visit this site regularly as it contains useful information regarding WithSecure's end-of-life program.
To inform partners and customers well in advance of an approaching end-of-life milestone, WithSecure sends an electronic notification respectively 180 days and 90 days prior to a product end of life.
Change policy
WithSecure reserves the right to change this policy without prior notice, in which case the new policy will be made available to partners and customers on the supported products page.
Overview
WithSecure products are supported on various Operating Systems, as detailed in their respective release notes or other product documentation. This documentation is correct at the time the product is released, but actual support may change during the lifetime of the product, as the Operating System vendors release new versions and stop supporting old versions.
WithSecure aims to support operating systems (OS) and their versions as long as the operating system manufacturer maintains public support and provides the OS with security updates, unless otherwise stated below. In some cases, extended support may be made available after the OS manufacturer has ended public support. Such extended support may be offered at additional cost to the customer and may require the customer to separately purchase extended support for the OS from the OS vendor.
In case extended support is available through OS vendor, WithSecure may at our discretion extend support for relevant products for as long as extended support is available for the OS.
WithSecure may place additional system requirements as conditions of support where this is necessary to ensure the reliability of the product. These requirements may include processor or hardware minimum requirements, or requirements related to supported or unsupported OS configurations. Where applicable, such requirements are specified in the latest release notes and user guides for the respective products.
Support according to operating system
Microsoft Windows
Support is for specified editions of Microsoft Windows and limited to versions that are currently supported by Microsoft and that currently receive security updates (up to the End of Extended Support date as first set by Microsoft, at the discretion of WithSecure).
If, during the lifetime of a supported version, Microsoft changes the End of Extended Support date of the version, then WithSecure will take reasonable efforts to continue providing support until the changed date.
WithSecure may choose to make available extended support at an additional cost for customers to continue to provide support for Windows releases that are no longer covered by Microsoft’s Extended Support but are still covered by Microsoft’s Extended Security Update program. In such cases, WithSecure may require that the customer has separately enrolled in Microsoft’s Extended Security Update program and has installed all updates available via that Extended Security Update program.
MacOS
The current, and two (2) previous major releases are supported.
Linux
For specified Linux distributions, WithSecure strives to follow the support and end-of-life schedules of the respective OS vendor or official distribution maintainer. Therefore, support is generally provided for the latest OS-vendor-supported minor versions of the major versions that currently receive regular official security updates from the OS vendor and where WithSecure can, with reasonable effort, obtain those regular security updates for compatibility testing. Support is provided for the official Linux kernel version of each supported minor release of a distribution.
iOS and iPadOS
The current and previous major release are supported.
Android
The current and previous major release are supported.
Additionally applying for all operating systems
Compatibility of new versions of WithSecure products is ensured for all supported major releases of supported operating systems where the latest available regular official security updates have been installed. WithSecure will undertake reasonable effort to ensure compatibility with previous minor versions and previous security updates of supported major releases as defined in this document, but where this is not possible with reasonable effort, WithSecure may advise customers to install the latest security updates to ensure compatibility.
When a new version (major release, minor release, or other version change) is released by an OS vendor for a supported OS, WithSecure may need to release a new version of WithSecure products to provide compatibility and may require customers to take that new version into use to ensure compatibility
WithSecure cannot guarantee that any current or previous versions of WithSecure products will continue to be compatible and will continue to operate with operating system versions beyond the date after which the operating system version is no longer officially supported by WithSecure.
The threat landscape is constantly evolving, which also means changes in the protection offered by WithSecure. Old products cannot respond to all the current threats.
Security fixes and non-security fixes are not provided for unsupported product versions. Virus definition updates are not tested with End-of-Lifed products. This may decrease the protection capability and reliability of old products, causing, for example, the malfunctioning of the product, conflicts with third party software, false positives and negatives.
WithSecure reserves the right to change the lifecycle policies without prior notice, in which case the new policy will be made available to partners and customers on the supported products page.
